Crescent Connector Phase I Project

Update 8/23/22: 

Work Beginning 8/24/22:

South Summit Street will be CLOSED Wednesday, August 24th, at 7:00 am at the track crossing.  The sidewalk will remain open.

 The crossing will re-open on Thursday, August 25th at 7:00 am

Work Beginning 8/9/22

The south track crossing on Park Street and the sidewalks at the crossing were opened Tuesday morning, August 9th.

The Central Street crossing was closed Tuesday morning, August 9th.  The road crossing at Central Street (near the AMTRAK station) and the sidewalk at the crossing will remain closed until Thursday morning, August 11th,  at 7:00 am.

Work Beginning 8/5/22

Park Street, at the southern track crossing (closest to Iroquois Avenue), and the sidewalks on both sides of the road at the crossing, will be closed Friday, August 5th, at 7:00 am.  The closure will remain in place until Tuesday, August 9th at 7:00 am.

It is suggested that vehicles coming from the south utilize South Street, West Street, and West Street Extension, or Iroquois and South Summit Streets to access Pearl Street and the reverse if coming from the north.   There are numerous detour and guidance signs posted for those who may be unfamiliar with our local streets.

Please note, access to all businesses north and south of the southern crossing will be maintained during the street and sidewalk closure that will begin on Friday morning.  At least one driveway access will be open for all properties. 

Work Beginning 7/29/22

Park Street, at the northern track crossing (closest to the Five Corners), and the sidewalks on both sides of the road at the crossing, will be closed Friday, July 29th, at 7:00 am.  The closure will remain in place until Tuesday August 2nd at 7:00 am.

Work Update 7/22/22

There will be no further sidewalk or road closures again until Friday, July 29th, when Park Street at the north rail crossing, and the sidewalks at that location, will be closed at 7:00 am.  More information on this will be sent out prior to this closure. While there will be no roadway work related to the Phase 1 project until July 29th, there are numerous paving and roadwork projects moving forward nearby, so please continue to follow the warning signs for those projects.

Work Update 7/18/22

South Summit Street and the sidewalk, at the track crossing, will remain closed through Tuesday afternoon, July 19th and will be re-opened as soon as the final paving has been completed. 

Work Beginning 7/15/22

South Summit Street at the track crossing will be closed this morning (July 15th) at 7:00 am.  The sidewalk at this crossing will also be closed at 7:00 am

This road and sidewalk crossing will be closed until 7:00 am on Tuesday, July 19th.

Work Beginning 7/8/22

MAPLE STREET (Route 117) will CLOSE at the MAPLE STREET railroad crossing Friday, July 8th at 7:00 am.  The sidewalks at this crossing will also be closed at 7:00 am.  Trucks should follow the detour signs at Route 289.

This road crossing and the sidewalks will remain closed for the next four days and will re-open again on Tuesday, July 12th, at 7:00 am.

The contractor works as quickly as possible, while accommodating rail and vehicular traffic, to get the crossings rebuilt and the road and sidewalks opened as soon as possible.  Thank you for following the designated detour routes and driving slowly through our detour zones.

Work Beginning 7/1/22

There will be no further sidewalk or road closures again until Friday July 8th, when Maple Street (Route 117), at the railroad crossing, will be closed at 7:00 am.  More information on this will be sent out prior to this closure.

Work Beginning 6/24/22

MAIN STREET (Route 15) will be CLOSED at the Main Street railroad crossing starting at 7 a.m., Friday June 24th and will REMAIN CLOSED until Tuesday, June 28th at 7 a.m.

Railroad Avenue will remain open.  Traffic may enter from the Main Street end but will have to exit via Lincoln Place or Central Street. 

Railroad Street will remain open.

Ivy Lane will remain open at the Central Street end for access to parking but will be closed at the Main Street end.

The sidewalks at the Main Street Crossing will be closed to pedestrians.

Work Beginning 6/17/22:

Friday, June 17th starting at 7:00 am, the Central Street railroad crossing will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic and will remain closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. 

The Contractor will be removing the tracks and ties at the crossing and rebuilding the crossing with new ties, rails and concrete panels and then repaving the roadway approaches. 

The Village of Essex Junction announces the start of the Crescent Connector Phase I Project. The project will focus on upgrading the existing railroad tracks, making them smoother and safer to cross. These upgrades will require the following streets to be closed to "thru traffic" at the rail crossing on Central Street, Main Street, and Maple Street, and the two crossings on Park Street and South Summit Street. Closures will happen one street at a time. 

Please note that construction work schedules may be fluid in nature, and work tasks may change due to weather, equipment/material availability, etc. The Village Engineer will provide updates and road closure dates as the work progresses. Updates will be listed on this page, on the news section of the website, and the Village of Essex Junction Facebook page. Work Beginning 6/13/22:

Work on the railroad tracks will begin on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at 7 am. The work will begin approximately 500' north of Central Street and will be completed in a southerly direction. This project will only focus on improvements to the rail and rail support subbase. The work this week will include the following:

  • Replacing defective railroad ties
  • Adjusting the rail elevation
  • Installing additional ballast (crushed stone)
  • Install new conduit underneath the crossing for crossing controls and communication
  • Install new concrete panels for the rail crossing at Central Street
  • Remove and replace existing bituminous concrete pavement on Central Street to match

Central Street Road Closure:

Closure begins Friday, June 17, 2022, at 7 am and will reopen on Tuesday, June 21, at 7 am.

Detour packages will be in place utilizing Grove Street to Main Street and Grove Street to Lincoln Street. 

The sidewalk along Central Street at the railroad crossing will also be closed. Pedestrians will be detoured on the sidewalk on Grove Street to either Main Street or Lincoln Street. Detour signs will be in place.

2022 Public Works Paving Schedule

The following is the paving schedule for the City of Essex Junction Public Works on September 15th-29th (weather permitting):

Essex-Colchester VT 2A & VT 289 (Circ Highway) Resurfacing

The following is a anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Sunday, September 18, 2022:

Sunday through Thursday - 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Continue berm removal, shoulder cleanup on VT-289.
  • Begin structure adjustments on VT Route 2A and VT-289.
  • Ditch work on SNR 127 between the intersection of VT Route 2A and US Route 7.

  • Guardrail replacement continues throughout the project limits on VT-289.

  • Milling to begin on VT-289. Vehicles should expect to travel on grooved (scarified) payment - USE CAUTION!
  • Continue guardrail replacement throughout the project limits on VT Route 2A.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Sunday, July 25, 2022:

Sunday through Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Milling to begin on VT-289. Vehicles should expect to travel on grooved (scarified) payment - USE CAUTION!
  • Continue guardrail replacement throughout the project limits on VT Route 2A.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Sunday, July 17, 2022:

Sunday through Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Weather permitting, continue paving the leveling course on VT Route 2A on the northern end of the project in Colchester.
  • Begin guardrail replacement throughout the project limits on VT Route 2A.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Sunday, July 10, 2022:

Sunday through Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Weather permitting, begin paving the leveling course on VT Route 2A on the southern end of the project in Essex.
  • Continue milling on the northern section of VT Route 2A in Colchester to the intersection of US Route 2/7 and SNR 127.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, July 4, 2022:

Monday:

  • No work due to the Independence Day holiday.

Tuesday through Thursday 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Continued berm removal on the roadway shoulders throughout the project area on VT Route 2A.
  • Begin repairing slopes behind the guardrails throughout the project area on VT Route 2A.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Monday, June 26, 2022:

PROJECT UPDATE: Due to equipment issues, milling operations were not performed. Berm removal began on the shoulders throughout the project limits of VT Route 2A.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

There will not be any work on this project the week of June 26, 2022. Work will resume on July 5, 2022, following the Independence Day Holiday.

The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Sunday, June 19, 2022:

Sunday through Thursday - 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Milling continues to progress northerly to the end of the project limits on VT Route 2A at the intersection of VT Route 2A, US Route 7 and SNR 127.
  • Begin guardrail replacement throughout the project limits on VT Route 2A.
  • Begin shoulder repair throughout the project limits on VT Route 2A.
The following is the anticipated work schedule for the week beginning Sunday, June 12, 2022:

Sunday through Thursday - 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.:

  • Milling begins on VT Route 2A at the southern end of the project, approximately the intersection of VT-2A/Lincoln Street and North Street.

Traffic Impact: Traffic control will be present, allowing for one lane of alternating travel.
