Why do I have to keep my dog on a leash?

We wanted to take some time to remind everyone that dogs must be on leash in the City unless you are in a designated off-leash area. This rule is not just to keep our dogs safe from cars and other animals, but also to protect people who may be afraid of dogs and other dogs who may be reactive.

Even the most well-trained dogs can get distracted by something and take off running, especially if they catch a scent or see something they want to chase. Keeping them on a leash keeps them by your side and prevents them from running into dangerous situations.

If your dog is prone to jumping on people or running up to strangers, a leash can help prevent accidental injuries.

Some people may be afraid of dogs or have allergies.

Leashes reduce the chance that your dog will eat or drink something poisonous.

By following leash rules, we create a safer, friendlier environment for everyone—people and pets alike. Thank you for doing your part to keep our community enjoyable and secure for all.
