The City of Essex Junction proudly unveiled its newly renovated City Offices at 2 Lincoln during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, September 26, 2025. The event marked the conclusion of extensive renovations aimed at enhancing both the functionality and historical charm of the building.
In July 2022, when the Village became a City, the City Council had a goal of reestablishing 2 Lincoln to the center of community activity. Council members, in collaboration with city management, soon recognized that the existing facility configuration could not adequately support the City's growing needs, which led to the initiation of the renovation project.
"It's been a roller coaster for staff for a long time," remarked City Council President Amber Thibeault during the ceremony. "Through it all, they show up to work every day with a smile on their face. On behalf of the City Council, I want to say we appreciate you and thank you."
The renovation project prioritized functionality and accessibility to ensure that the building can effectively serve the community for the next century. Key upgrades included a formal entryway, a new layout that better accommodates City staff, and the installation of an elevator to provide access to all three floors. Additionally, the HVAC system was improved, resulting in a more energy-efficient environment for both employees and visitors.
A unique aspect of this project is that 2 Lincoln is comprised of four buildings, known as buildings A, B, C, and D. The majority of the construction work focused on buildings B, C, and D, where crews unearthed historical artifacts hidden within the walls, including old bottles and a book.
During the ceremony, several individuals and organizations were recognized for their contributions to the project. Thanks were extended to former Village Trustees and current City Councilors, as well as essential City project managers Harlan Smith and Rick Jones, whose leadership was crucial throughout the renovation process.
Special thanks were also made to the hardworking crews from Essex Junction Recreation and Parks and Public Works, who facilitated the transition of City offices during the renovations. The dedication of the design team, Scott & Partners, was highlighted for their ability to blend historical preservation with modern office needs, ensuring the renovation remained true to the building's character. The construction team from Breadloaf was also recognized for their professionalism and commitment throughout the renovation process, along with other construction organizations that contributed to the project.
The City acknowledged the Senior Center and CHIPS for their relocation during construction, as well as the Essex Junction Fire Department, Essex Police Department, and Brownell Library for hosting City meetings during the renovations. Additional thanks were given to Maplehurst Florist for allowing access through their driveway during the project. Finally, the City expressed appreciation to the residents of Essex Junction who were affected by the renovation.
"I feel honored and proud to have played a role in renovating the heart of Five Corners and Essex Junction," stated Regina Mahony, City Manager. "This homage to the community's history will remain as the home for City functions and community gatherings as we continue to evolve around it."
As the event concluded, attendees were invited to tour the newly renovated facilities, allowing them to witness firsthand the enhancements made to 2 Lincoln. The revitalized City Offices are set to play a crucial role in meeting the growing needs of Essex Junction as it continues to evolve. With these enhancements, the City is poised to effectively serve its residents for generations to come.
