As spring slowly unfolds, we look forward to new life emerging in our landscape. Crocuses are popping, forsythia is blooming, and trees are awakening out of dormancy. It is an exciting time and a motivator for folks to be part of this annual unfolding. Garden preparation is happening, and many homeowners may be planting trees. Trees play such an important role in our ecosystem by mitigating climate change, reducing stormwater runoff, providing wildlife habitat and immense beauty.

Spring is a busy time for The City of Essex Junctions Tree Committee. Our winter planning efforts meet the road as we plant new trees along the streets of Essex Junction. The committee carefully reviews possible locations before planting. “The right tree in the right place” is the adage used by arborists when sitting a tree. Soil conditions, power lines, and species selection are all factored into the decision. A great source of information on tree selection, planting, and tree care can be found at the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program.

If you are thinking of planting a tree or intend to plant one, the Tree Committee recommends this video from Burlington’s city arborist, VJ Comai. His informative video will provide you with the knowledge and techniques for tree planting, which will help the tree thrive for years to come!
