Miniature Memories: A Collaborative Book Nook at Brownell Library

Saturday, May 4, 2024
PM – 3 PM

Explore the art of miniature by creating small representations of the books you love, or the books you wish existed, for our miniature library book nook, to be displayed on the shelves of the youth collection. This is an intergenerational program, youth should be at least eight years old, teens, and adults are also welcome. Younger people or people with limited hand mobility may want to bring someone to help.

“Forever, Chinatown” is the story of unknown, self-taught 81-year-old artist Frank Wong who has spent the past four decades recreating his fading memories by building romantic, detailed miniature models of the San Francisco Chinatown rooms of his youth. This film takes the journey of one individual and maps it to a rapidly changing urban neighborhood from the 1940s to present day. A meditation on memory, community, and preserving one’s own legacy.

The film starts at 2pm, the craft starts at 2:30pm. This program is inspired by this year's Vermont Read, Last Night at the Telegraph Club, which takes place in the same location, at about the same time as Frank Wong's memories. Pick up a copy of this year's book at the library.
