Railroad Avenue Waterline Replacement Project
The City of Essex Junction Railroad Avenue Waterline Replacement Project is tentatively scheduled to start on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Don Weston Excavating, Inc. will be installing a new waterline along Railroad Avenue from Central Street to Main Street. They will also connect the new waterline to the existing waterline along Lincoln Place.
Work to install the new waterline in the Central Street and Railroad Avenue intersection will take place between 8 AM and 4 PM on Tuesday, May 26. To complete this work, it will be necessary to temporarily shut down water service along Central Street between Lincoln Street and Grove Street. The Contractor will work to minimize the duration of the water service interruption.
Central Street will be closed to northbound traffic from Lincoln Street to Grove Street. One-way traffic will be allowed on Central Street from Grove Street to Lincoln Street. Railroad Avenue will be closed between Central Street and Lincoln Place. Traffic control will be in place to help direct traffic.

Daily Project Update: 6/18/2026
Today the Contractor abandoned the testing service line for the new waterline in the Central Street intersection. Due to the heavy rain, they were unable to complete any other work.
Tomorrow the Contractor will excavate existing material from the waterline trench and install gravel in preparation for pavement in the Central Street intersection. They will also mill existing pavement along Railroad Avenue in preparation for top course pavement.
Tomorrow Central Street will be closed at the Central Street and Railroad Avenue intersection. The Contractor will try to maintain one lane open for traffic. Railroad Avenue will be closed between Central Street and Lincoln Place.
The contractor provides the best prediction of their next work cycle. Please keep in mind that construction is a fluid process, and sometimes plans must change based on weather, conditions found in the field, or other factors.

Main Street Sidewalk Replacement Project
The Main Street Sidewalk Replacement Project is tentatively scheduled to start June 8, 2026. Poulin Companies, LLC will replace the existing sidewalks along Main Street between Pleasant Street and Railroad Street, and between Grove Street and Ivy Lane.
The contractor will attempt to maintain two-way traffic to the extent possible, with periods of alternating one-way traffic as necessary. Traffic control will be in place to help direct traffic.
Portions of the sidewalks will be closed within the work zone, with appropriate pedestrian detours and signs in place to direct pedestrian traffic.
Throughout construction, the City Engineer will send daily emails about progress and the anticipated schedule, as they relate to access and disruptions to the adjacent properties. An initial email will be sent on June 5th as a reminder of the June 8th start date.

Daily Project Update: 6/18/2026
Today the Contractor removed the forms from the newly poured sidewalk, they opened the driveway for the Calvary Baptist Church, and removed existing sidewalk along Main Street towards Church Street.
Tomorrow the Contractor will continue to remove existing sidewalk, stopping before the driveway for the apartments at 53 Main Street. They will install sidewalk forms where they have removed existing sidewalk, and if they have time they will pour that section of sidewalk in the afternoon.
Tonight the driveway for A.W. Rich Funeral Home is closed at the Main Street entrance. Please use one of the secondary entrances to access the back parking lot.
Tomorrow the driveways for A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Champlain Gynecology, Skin Deep Medical Aesthetics, and True Path Wellness will be closed at the Main Street entrances. Please use one of the secondary entrances, such as the entrance on Pleasant Street, through the Calvary Baptist Church parking lot, or the entrance on Church Street.
Tomorrow Main Street may be reduced to alternating one-way traffic while equipment or material is being delivered or removed from the site. Traffic control will be in-place to help direct traffic.

2026 City Resurfacing Project
The City will implement its 2026 Resurfacing Project, which focuses on repaving selected roads based on their level of necessity and wear. All work should be finished by August 28.This year’s resurfacing will cover the following roads:
- Church Street,
- East Street, and
- Parts of Main Street
On May 31, the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) will begin repaving the eastbound side of Route 15, from Susie Wilson Road to West Street Extension, with a targeted finish date of June 8. This roadwork will be completed between 7 pm and 6 am.
The City encourages residents to plan accordingly and remain alert while navigating these areas during the road paving process. Please keep in mind that construction is a fluid process and sometimes plans must change based upon weather, conditions found in the field, or other factors.
