On July 27, the Trustees held a work session on Essex Junction Independence. The following is what was discussed. 

The Trustees examined a list of current Village committees and potential future city committees and commissions.  The potential list of new city committees included arts, climate & energy, racial equity & inclusion, Downtown District, economic development, housing commission, recreation & parks advisory, and police advisory.

On July 13, the Trustees held a work session on Essex Junction Independence. The following is what was discussed.   

The Trustees reviewed the three statutory options for contracting services with another municipality, which include an interlocal contract, forming a union municipal district, or through an intermunicipal police services agreement.  The specific statutes are:  24 V.S.A. § 4801-4933 and 24 V.S.A. § 1938.   

There was consensus to use interlocal contracts for any contracting of services or other agreements with the Town of Essex.

With the restoration of Amtrak service, the Essex Junction Trustees are highlighting the need for an expanded and enhanced structure to serve Amtrak passengers at Vermont’s busiest train station.   To make the point, Village Trustees and friends of passenger rail will gather at the Station on Railroad Avenue in Essex Junction July 19– the first stop of the Vermonter as it heads to New York City - to review the current status of the station, to highlight the 2015 planning initiative that proposed a major redesign and renovation of the existing structure and to see how the project fits into the Village’s economic development plans.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation has announced celebratory events at all Amtrak stations in Vermont as Amtrak resumes service on Monday, July 19.  The Village of Essex Junction is home to Vermont’s busiest Amtrak station and is pleased to host a celebration of the arrival of the Vermonter as it pulls into the station.
