The Village Community Development Department is responsible for the following functions: Reviewing and making recommendations for Planning and Zoning applications. Staffing the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment, attending meetings of Village wide groups such as, the Heart and Soul of Essex, the Tree Advisory Committee, and the Bike/Walk Committee and the Essex Economic Development Commission.
County and region wide the Department represents the Village with the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission, the Vermont Department of Transportation and major employers such as GlobalFoundries and New England Central Railroad.
The Department has taken a lead on recent grant applications and has been influential in promoting ways to make the Village core a more welcoming place for residents, visitors, and business owners while accommodating, more efficiently, the high traffic demand occurring at the Five Corners intersection.

Thoughtful Growth in Action
Thoughtful Growth in Action (TGIA) is exploring ways to improve the planning governance structure in the Town and Village of Essex Junction. The project’s impetus is the belief that the community wants to move towards a shared Essex vision that simultaneously honors and builds on the unique characteristics of the village and the town outside the village. Currently, the Village and the Town outside the Village each has a planning commission and a zoning board of adjustment. This project will explore what different planning governance models could look like and which ones would be a good fit for Essex's desire to have a shared vision.
