Water and Tax Bills Q&A

Posted Wednesday, August 24, 2022

The deadlines for paying your City of Essex Junction water and tax bills are quickly approaching. As a reminder, water bills are due on August 29th, and tax bills are due on September 15th. Do you have a question about your water or tax bill? Here are the answers to some of our frequently asked questions.

1. When are water bills due?
Water bills are due on August 29, 2022, to avoid the 5% penalty.

2. When are tax bills due?
The first installment must be paid no later than September 15, 2022, and the second installment must be paid no later than March 15, 2023. Payments will be accepted anytime but must be paid or postmarked by the due dates to avoid an 8% penalty.

3. Where do I pay my water and tax bills?
Checks should be made payable to "City of Essex Junction" and this year may be paid in person at the Town office or left in the payment drop box at either 2 Lincoln St (City office) or 81 Main street (Town office). Please include a copy of your bill with your payment to provide us with the correct account number.
Credit and debit cards are accepted at the Town office (81 Main Street), by phone at 888-877-0450, or on our online payment system.
Another payment option is to sign up for the free automatic payment program. Enroll online at www.essexjunction.org/departments/finance. Installment amounts will be automatically deducted from your bank account on the due date.

4. Who do I contact if I have a question about my water or tax bill?
If you have questions about your water bill, please contact the City office at 802-857-0073. If you have questions about your property tax bill, please call the Town office at 802-879-0413 option 6.

5. Why am I paying Town taxes and paying my bills at the Town Office?
Voting on this year's fiscal budget (7/1/22-6/30/23) was done before the City Charter approval. Because of that, we will continue to pay Town taxes and share services with the Town this fiscal year. Services include the City Clerk, Finance, IT, and the Assessor office. The next fiscal year budget (7/1/23-6/30/24) will be independent of the Town, and there will be no Town tax on your bill in August 2023, and services will be available at the City office.
