VILLAGE OF ESSEX JUNCTION

Volunteer Opportunities

Looking for a way to get involved in your local community?

The following opportunities to participate in local government are available through the Village of Essex Junction. Terms on the following volunteer boards and commissions are expiring and vacancies will need to be filled:

- Essex Junction Planning Commission. The Planning Commission usually meets twice per month to review development applications and updates to the Land Development Code (Zoning Regulations).  The Planning Commission also updates the Comprehensive Plan every five years. There are two 3-year terms available beginning July 1, 2012.

- Essex Junction Zoning Board of Adjustment.  The Zoning Board of Adjustment usually meets once per month and considers requests for variances, conditional uses and appeals of staff decisions.  There are two 3-year terms available beginning July 1, 2012.

- Channel 17 Trustee.  The Channel 17 Trustees oversee the Chittenden County Government Access Channel Trust and are appointed by each of the member municipalities. The Trustees contract with CCTV to operate the channel on behalf of its members.  One member and one alternate member position is available.

- Tri-Town Joint Review Committee. The Tri-Town Joint Review Committee meets at least once per year to review and make recommendations to the annual operating and maintenance budget of the Village Sewage Treatment Facility.  The Committee expects to be meeting once every month or two to review issues relating to the $15 million Plant Upgrade Project.  There are two positions available.

- Capital Program Analysis Committee. The Capital Program Analysis Committee will examine all of the Village of Essex Junction’s municipal capital needs (i.e., streets & highways, water, sewer, buildings, etc.)  for the next 10 years and then prioritize them into a 5 year plan.  The committee is to be made up of 1 or 2 Trustees, 1 Planning Commission member and 3 citizen volunteers.

Any interested Village resident may submit a letter of interest to the Village Trustees, c/o Village Manager, 2 Lincoln Street, Essex Junction, VT 05452, by May 17, 2012 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Interviews are expected to be held at the May 22nd Trustees meeting.

If you received a blue door tag from the Village Water Dept. indicating we'd like to change out your water meter, please call 876-5033 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to schedule a mutually convenient time to change out the meter.  Appointments are available between the hours of 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday-Friday.  When calling or emailing, please indicate your name, address and phone number where you can be reached during these hours.

The Village Water Dept. will be removing water meters in the Village and replacing them with new radio-read meters.  Property owners will not be charged for any work associated with the change of the water meter.  Replacement of the water meter should take approximately 1/2 hour unless unforeseen problems occur.  Please remove any obstructions around the meter prior to the arrival of our personnel.

Your assistance with this program is greatly appreciated.

This year marks the 42nd anniversary of Green Up Day on Saturday, May 5th.  This unique Vermont tradition helps us all practice stewardship on a local level.  The accumulation of trash along roadsides and streams is an ongoing problem and we need everyone to do their part to keep the Village beautiful.

Green up bags are available at Lincoln Hall (the Essex Jct. Municipal Building at the Five Corners),  the Brownell Library and Essex Jct. Recreation and Parks.

On May 5th, filled bags may be delivered to the Essex Junction Municipal Building between 9 AM and 12 noon.  You may also leave them on the green belt on the following streets:  Pearl, Park, Lincoln, Main, Maple, South Summit and South Streets.

If you would like to participate in Green Up Day or if you have any questions, please call the Village office at 878-6944.
