The Brownell Library is committed to providing all patrons with the best materials possible for seeking information. The Brownell Library espouses the basic principles governing information freedom and access as outlined in the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights. The library is not responsible for the quality or content of information encountered on the Internet. The library also assumes no responsibility for any claims, liabilities, actions or damages to personal property arising from use of any library owned or leased electronic services, or resulting from the use of data made available through electronic information services. In order to ensure the fair use of the computer technology now available at this library, patrons are asked to observe the following guidelines:

General Use
Please be considerate of other users, and leave the computers and software as you found them. Computers will be turned on and off only by Library staff. Any computer or printer problems must be immediately reported to a librarian. You may reserve time on the computers for the current day only. Users more than ten minutes late will forfeit their reservation. Users working on the computer in a group will count as one person. As Brownell Library is a public space, do not display images that would generally be considered offensive.

The Internet

1. Library Patrons 18 and older have access to the internet at computers located in the reference/non-fiction area. Patrons will have 30 minutes of use and can continue to use a computer until it is needed by another patron. Patrons will be asked to sign-in for a computer and sign-out when done.
2. Library patrons 17 and younger have access to the internet at computers located in the youth library. Patrons will be allowed one sign-up daily with a maximum of one hour of computer time per day. Patrons will be asked to sign-in for a computer and sign-out when done.
3. After school (2:30-6:00), the one daily sign-up is limited to 30 minutes.
4. During school hours, adults may use youth computers.
5. One 15 minute express computer is available for all patrons. Use of this computer is limited to 15 minutes with no renewals.

 

Word Processing

1. Library patrons are allowed one-hour for word processing on the computer that does not have internet access and can continue using this computer until it is needed by another patron. Patrons will be asked to sign-in for a computer and sign out when done.
2. Library patrons are allowed 30 minutes for word processing on computers that have internet access and can continue using the computer until it is needed by another patron. Patrons will be asked to sign-in for a computer and sign out when done.

Charges

1. Any damage to the computers or their peripherals by any patron will be charged to that patron.
2. The first 3 black and white pages printed are free: there is a charge of 10 cents per page for anything printed after this. Color printing is available by choosing the $.50 Copy Color Laser. These costs help offset the considerable cost of ink and paper. Please check the length of any document before printing it out.

Children

1. All patrons of the Brownell Library, regardless of age, have equal access to the information provided by the Library.
2. The Brownell Library's policy on the use of computers and access to the Internet is the same as for the borrowing of books : parents and guardians of children are responsible for the appropriate use by children of the Library facilities, and the Library assumes no responsibility for supervising users who are minors.
3. Parents and guardians who are interested in providing guidance to children in the use of the Internet may connect to an Internet site on Brownell's Using the World Wide Web page under Consumer Information called "Child Safety on the Information Highway".
4. The Wayne Computer for Kids is available for children Grade 5 and under. Youth internet usage rules apply.

Software

1. Users must respect the integrity of the Library's computers and utilize only those programs and services posted on each computer.
2. The Brownell Library cannot be responsible for any damage or loss of data that may occur while using the computers.
3. Patrons cannot run any executable programs from floppy disks or CDs, and may print information wanted from the Internet. Download to A:/ floppy disk is available.
4. Any application used by a patron must be properly exited upon completion.

Sanctions
Users who try to bypass the security of the network or fail to comply with our computer guidelines, will lose computer privileges. The library will assist in investigations of individuals who hack any computers via the library network.
